The Club chose the perfect day on which to hold its 50th anniversary celebrations which were combined with the official opening of its new clubhouse and floodlights.
In the afternoon of Saturday, 17 June, many members and friends watched an American Tournament and saw Ted Lush, who until recently was Chairman of Tarvin Parish Council, open the new facilities. Ted, whose son James is a former member of the Club, cut the cake and spoke warmly of the Club’s contribution to the village. The tennis playing facilities are some of the best in the area and the latest improvements were made possible through a generous grant from Sport England.
The American Tournament was won by Felicity Pochin, currently Club Secretary, and Richard Brannam, who travelled from Nottingham to be present. Richard was the Club’s singles champion in 1983. His brother Chris also played and they were joined at the celebrations by their father, Patrick, who is still a Club member.
In the evening 87 members and friends enjoyed a splendid 3 course dinner at the recently refurbished village Community Centre which proved to be the perfect venue for the event. Catering was provided by Sophie Fearnall and the music by the Sue Reid Trio.
The Club’s 50th birthday wasn’t the only event being celebrated. Ted and Jane Lush had just become grandparents and Club members, Graham Bunting, who organised the afternoon event, and Sarah Mitchell announced their engagement.
Many committee members helped in the organisation of a truly memorable day and the Club is also appreciative of the support given by the Community Centre in making the event a success.
