AUTUMN 2009 NEWSLETTER
Dear All
The summer season is now behind us – even the junior coaching has had to give way to failing light – but I hope everyone intends to keep playing through the winter, especially if this wonderful autumn weather continues.
The off-peak daytime sessions led by Jean Davies, Ellis Davies and Margaret Dixon will certainly continue through the winter and the club owes them a vote of thanks in ensuring their success. Club afternoons have now started on Saturdays commencing from 1.30 pm and we would like to encourage as many club members as possible to get along.
The winter league has also got underway on Sunday mornings between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm and this means, unfortunately, there will be a few occasions when all 4 courts are occupied by match play. There is a schedule of matches on the website – www.tarvintennisclub.co.uk - and the club notice board which will indicate likely availability during these hours. However, some home fixtures may have to be rearranged, particularly if there is bad weather, hence this schedule is a guide only. Chris Edwards does a sterling job scheduling the fixtures so if you are unsure then speak to Chris or me if you need to check on availability. Remember that generally Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons remain free.
Some good news
The club has been awarded 1,000 tennis balls by the Head Sports company and this is as a consequence of club members visiting the Tennishead website. Thanks to all who did so, as this has resulted in a much appreciated windfall.
We use new balls generally only in match play. These then feed into club play and are not always in the best of condition. As a result of this unexpected bonus, the committee has asked our captain, Keith Barker, to make some new balls available for ‘official’ off peak sessions and for Saturday afternoons, another reason for you to come along. I hope club members enjoy the opportunity to play with new balls.
Club Tournaments
It was another very successful event organised by the Playing Committee and Finals’ Day was blessed with very good weather and four keenly contested three-set finals. The results were as follows:
Men’s Singles Peter Nosworthy RU Chris Jacques Ladies’ Singles Not contested this year Men’s Doubles Dave Thomas RU Chris Edwards Sam Walsh Keith Barker Ladies’ Doubles Sue Jebson RU Wendy Rae Andrea Edwards Andrea Gray Mixed Doubles Rob Millar RU Keith Barker Allyson Clarkson Sue Jebson
It is invidious to pick anyone out but most pleasing must be the performance of one of our younger members, Sam Walsh, in winning the men’s doubles.
The Junior Tournament held in July was equally successful thanks to help from our coach, Gary Ward, and the results of the tournament have been published earlier.
Improvements
Currently we are making a few improvements to the interior of the main club hut with a built-in cupboard replacing some ageing facilities kindly donated by club members in the past. If anyone has further ideas of what other improvements the committee can consider, just let us know.
We are about to purchase further windbreaks/net bands to screen the bottom courts from the play area and the football field, and these should be in evidence before Christmas.
As always, the priority is the playing condition of the courts and although we employ professional assistance in this regard, we still need the courts to be brushed regularly. Please don’t forget this and do your bit for the benefit of all.
Coaching
Perhaps the winter will be a good opportunity to improve your game and Gary Ward, our coach, would welcome a call or email from you. His telephone number is 07836 273271 and his website is www.whackit-tennis.com.
Fees
To demonstrate the Committee’s confidence in the Club’s financial position, we will be recommending at the AGM (Friday, 5 February – a date for your diary) that the 2010 fees will be held at the same level as 2009. We are not anticipating any objections!
Christmas Fayre/Christmas Tree Decoration
As usual the Club will be supporting the Tarvin Village Christmas Fayre on 4 December but we do need ideas/assistance for our stall and for the Christmas tree decoration in the Methodist Chapel. Speak to a committee member if you can help.
Wimbledon 2010
And lastly, may I encourage any members who have not signed up to the LTA’s British Tennis initiative to do so; anyone joining by 30 November 2009 will increase our allocation of Wimbledon tickets for summer 2010 championships? And remember it costs nothing to join British Tennis. You can access the membership link on the LTA website: www.lta.org.
I hope everyone will continue to play and support the club to ensure that it continues to be one of the most successful clubs in the area.
